Tavs Jørgensen
Researcher in Digital FabricationTavs Jørgensen is a Danish-born researcher, designer, and Associate Professor at the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) at the University of the West of England. Beginning his career as a craft potter and ceramic designer, Jørgensen transitioned into academia—teaching at institutions such as the Royal College of Art and the University of Plymouth—where he became a pioneer in combining traditional craft with digital fabrication. His research focuses on the intersection of advanced manufacturing, digital tooling, glass, and ceramics, exploring how digital design methods can expand the expressive and technical boundaries of tactile materials.
Glassworks encompasses Jørgensen’s extensive research into applying digital fabrication and parametric design tools to the art of glassmaking. Utilizing custom reconfigurable tooling, 3D printing, and digital slump-moulding processes, the project investigates new methods for shaping molten glass into fluid, complex, and organic geometries. By combining computer-aided design with the raw physical behavior of hot glass, Glassworks reimagines traditional mold-making, demonstrating how digital workflows can give rise to novel aesthetic forms that would be impossible to achieve through conventional manual techniques.
