Stéphane Noël
Producer and curatorStéphane Noël is a Swiss independent producer, curator, and creative practitioner specializing in contemporary performing arts, new media, and interdisciplinary cultural projects. Throughout his career, he has directed and curated prominent international festivals—including Les Urbaines and the Belluard Bollwerk International—and served as an advisor for major cultural institutions across Europe and Asia, such as Gaîté Lyrique in Paris and Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao. Bridging the gap between artistic creation and technological research, Noël’s practice focuses on exploring how emerging technologies, urbanism, and digital culture shape contemporary human experience.
Das Fremde (created in collaboration with AI researcher Michael Spranger) is an interactive media installation that explores artificial intelligence, language evolution, and human-machine communication. The project features a colony of autonomous robotic agents that generate their own artificial language and culture in real time, which is then disrupted when human visitors enter their space. By placing human participants and synthetic lifeforms in a shared physical environment, Das Fremde questions whether genuine dialogue, cultural integration, and empathy can exist between two species with fundamentally different languages, visual appearances, and origins.
