María Castellanos
ArtistMaría Castellanos Vicente (Gijón, 1985) is an artist and researcher whose work explores technological prostheses, wearable devices and cyborgs as ways of expanding human sensory capabilities. Her work has received awards including Next Things 2015 and the Tentaciones Prize in 2011, and has been exhibited internationally.
Alberto Valverde (Madrid, 1967) is an artist and technologist specialising in interactive systems, multimedia installations, web design and robotics. His work investigates chaos as a form of order and the relationship between humans and machines. In 2010, he received first prize at the 11th Unión Fenosa International Exhibition for his interactive installation Reflejos y Antireflejos.
Environment Dress is a wearable technology project by María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde that explores the relationship between environmental conditions, human emotions and social behaviour. The garment uses sensors to measure variables such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, dust, carbon monoxide, UV radiation, humidity and ambient light. These geolocated data are combined with users’ emotional states to create an open database and a global map accessible through a website or app. The dress also communicates environmental changes through customisable light and movement patterns. Developed using open-source technology, Arduino and digital fabrication tools, the project allows users to replicate or adapt the system for their own clothing.
