Artist and industrial engineer

Joaquín Fargas is an Argentine artist and industrial engineer whose work brings together art, science and technology. Since the late 1980s, he has explored creative ways to communicate scientific concepts and raise awareness of environmental issues. He founded the Exploratorio Centre for Art, Science and Technology in Buenos Aires and established one of Latin America’s first bioart laboratories at Maimónides University in 2008. His practice combines biological materials, robotics and digital technologies to investigate life, ecological interdependence and possible futures. His internationally exhibited works include Biosphere, which uses sealed ecosystems to represent the fragility of life on Earth, and Glaciator, a robotic project addressing glacier preservation. He has received recognition from UNESCO’s Latin American science and technology popularisation network for his contribution to integrating art, science and technology.

Art at the dawn of the genetic revolution

In this presentation, Joaquín Fargas examines how advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering are opening new possibilities for artistic creation. He explores bioart as a multidisciplinary practice that brings artists into dialogue with scientific research, using living organisms and biological processes as artistic materials. The presentation considers the creative and ethical questions raised by genetic manipulation, cloning and other emerging biotechnologies, and how artists can help society reflect on the implications of these developments.
