Joaquin Fargas

Bio artist

Joaquín Fargas is an Argentine artist and industrial engineer whose work brings together art, science and technology. Since the 1990s, he has explored the use of emerging technologies in artistic practice, developing projects around life, its preservation and the relationships between living beings and their environment. His work includes bioart, robotics, interactive installations and environmental projects, often combining biological materials with technological systems. He founded the Exploratorio Centre for Art, Science and Technology and the Argentine Bioart Laboratory at Maimónides University, where he held the Chair of Art and Technology. He has also served as Executive Director of UNESCO’s Network for the Popularization of Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Big Brain Project

Big Brain Project is an interactive bioart installation that connects neuronal cell cultures located in different parts of the world through the internet. Each node combines living neural tissue with an artificial neural system and receives information from its surroundings, such as light, sound, temperature, movement and vibration. These environmental signals are translated into electrical impulses and transmitted across the network, creating a distributed, hybrid brain. By connecting biological processes and digital communication technologies, the project explores the relationship between individual and collective intelligence, questioning the boundaries of the human body and imagining a global organism whose parts communicate across geographical distances.
