Jennifer Steinkamp
Installation artistJennifer Steinkamp is an American installation artist based in Los Angeles, recognised as a pioneer in digital animation and new media art. She studied experimental animation at the California Institute of the Arts before earning a BFA and MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Since the late 1980s, she has used computer-generated imagery and 3D animation to explore the relationships between nature, architecture, movement and perception. Her work transforms physical spaces through large-scale projections of trees, flowers and abstract organic forms, creating environments that blur the boundaries between the real and the virtual. She has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Clark Art Institute. She was also a professor in UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts.
Jennifer Steinkamp creates immersive digital installations that transform architectural spaces through animated imagery and, in some works, sound. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, she uses computer-generated animations of plants, trees and abstract forms to simulate movement, growth and the passage of time. Her projections interact with the architecture around them, altering how viewers perceive space and creating an experience that is both familiar and artificial. Through this combination of digital technology, motion and spatial design, Steinkamp explores the relationship between nature, perception and the built environment.
