Esther Pizarro
ArtistEsther Pizarro is a Spanish visual artist, researcher, and Professor of Fine Arts at the Universidad Europea de Madrid. Holding a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, her practice explores spatial mapping, urbanism, data visualization, and the relationship between physical territory and digital networks. Pizarro creates large-scale immersive installations and cartographic sculptures that translate complex socio-geographical data—such as urban mobility, information flows, and environmental change—into tangible physical structures and interactive light-based environments.
His most recent project, “Liquid Mapping: connected to…”, maps how Spain is connected to the rest of the world through undersea cables—the true information superhighways of the 21st century. The result is a large installation of glass tubes through which colored electroluminescent cables circulate (corresponding to the year of installation). The light flickers intermittently, interacting with an audio track in the form of light pulses (data transmission). The installation is connected to a diagram that spans the entire vertical wall of the room and shows the evolution over time (by years of activity) of this liquid cartography through illuminated screens displaying lines and data.
