Choreographer and digital designerDavid Middendorp is a Dutch choreographer and digital artist known for pioneering the integration of modern dance with cutting-edge technology. Trained at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and the Rotterdam Dance Academy, he founded his company, Another Kind of Blue, to explore the boundaries between human movement and digital media. Middendorp’s work seamlessly blends live choreography with drones, virtual reality, motion capture, and interactive projection mapping, earning him international acclaim on stages across Europe and platforms like America’s Got Talent.
Airman is an innovative dance performance that explores the relationship between human performers and autonomous technology through the use of customized drones. In this piece, dancers share the stage with a swarm of flying drones that act not merely as technological props, but as interactive partners moving in harmony with the choreography. The project utilizes specialized software to choreograph the drones’ spatial movements alongside the dancers, creating a poetic, weightless dialogue that examines how artificial entities and human bodies can coexist, react to one another, and share emotional resonance.
