Chiara Passa
Visual artist working in media artChiara Passa is an italian visual artist working in media art since 1997. She graduated from the Fine Arts Academy of Rome (M.F.A.) and has a Master in audio-visual media at the Faculty of Modern Literature. Her artistic research analyses differences in virtual spaces through a variety of techniques, technologies and devices, often using virtual reality and augmented reality technologies as an artistic medium to explore architecture as interface. She uses VR and AR to comprise their intrinsic language and so on for shaking-up and challenging the static notion of architecture, by exploring the liminal duality between tangible and virtual place, achieving in art a strange oscillation.
“Circle in Circle” is part of Inside the Geometry, a bilingual virtual reality series that began in 2015 and has since developed into more than 35 VR figures.
“Circle in Circle” is composed of 12 Google Cardboard 3D viewers and their corresponding smartphones, each playing a different VR animation. Arranged on the ground, the Google Cardboards form a circular figure inspired by the circular square of the Korčula Memorial Complex.
The work uses VR technology as an integral part of its intrinsic semantics. Through the 3D viewers, spectators bow toward the ground, kneeling before technology, and use it to look into depth, moving beyond the ontological vision of the place itself. Beneath the surface, animated forms emerge through their own metaphysics, existing and moving beyond their original functionality.
In this way, “Circle in Circle” establishes a relationship between body, technology, geometry, and place, transforming the act of looking into a physical and spatial experience.
