Akira Wakita
Artist, engineer and professorAkira Wakita is a Japanese artist, scientist and Professor at Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies. After completing his Ph.D. in Media and Governance with research on the application of 3D CAD to medicine, he worked at a design company before moving into academia. At the age of 40, a serious illness prompted him to reconsider his outlook on life and led him to explore themes such as existence, mortality, time, and the boundary between reality and illusion. He develops original software grounded in geometry and dynamics to create moving-image works and installations that bring art and science into dialogue. His major works include Lightning Forest / Energy Flow (2025), Dragon Rain (2024) and BLOCK UNIVERSE (2024).
Furnished Fluid is an installation by Akira Wakita that makes invisible airflows around furniture visible through real-time fluid simulations. Three miniature chairs representing iconic industrial designs are placed in front of large screens displaying the movement of air particles around their shapes. By combining physical objects with digital visualisations, the project reveals how furniture influences the surrounding air and encourages viewers to perceive familiar objects from a new perspective.
