Akiko Nakayama
PainterAkiko Nakayama is a Japanese multi-disciplinary painter born in 1988 whose work centers on capturing the transformation and flow of energy across performance, video, and immersive installations. By combining vibrant colors with physical movement, she creates evolving visual works that function like improvisational poetry. Her practice explores the interplay of shapes, textures, and fluid mediums, bringing raw materials to life through their unique chemical and physical properties. Renowned internationally, Nakayama has served as a featured visual soloist alongside the Vienna Academy Orchestra and has showcased her art at major global events including MUTEK Montréal, the Ars Electronica Festival, Glastonbury Festival, TEDx Haneda, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony.
Alive Painting is a real-time visual performance where colors, liquids, and textures morph and react on a horizontal surface, captured via an overhead camera and projected onto large screens. The project treats paint as a living, breathing entity, allowing fluid dynamics and physical forces to dictate the visual narrative alongside the artist’s subtle manipulations. Frequently paired with live soundscapes, the project creates an ephemeral, immersive experience where art exists only in the moment of its creation, capturing the beauty of movement, transformation, and impermanence.
