Bio Artist

Ryan Buyssens is an American media artist, inventor, and Assistant Professor of Sculpture and Applied Design at the University of Central Florida. Raised near Detroit, MI, his work is heavily influenced by the mechanized aesthetic of the automotive industry. Holding an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Buyssens combines traditional craftsmanship—such as woodworking and metalworking—with advanced digital fabrication technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and micro-controllers. His practice investigates the dichotomy between the organic and the synthetic, using interactive kinematic objects to explore human perception, artificial life, and the socio-technological consequences of progress.

A cyborg possibility

A Cyborg Possibility (Resistance) is an interactive kinetic art project and paper proposal presented at Technarte that explores the hybrid intersection of animal nature and machine technology. The work centers on Resistance, a series of fully articulated, laser-sintered mechanical wings mounted on walls. Equipped with proximity sensors and micro-controllers, the cold, high-tech machine structures remain dormant until visitors approach, at which point they abruptly trigger fluid, lifelike flapping movements. By contrasting organic movement with machine aesthetics and trapping symbolic wings against a wall, the installation creates an alluring yet startling tension—questioning whether technology will ultimately liberate human existence or hold it captive.
