He studied music at the University of Oxford, composition at the Royal College of Music and opera writing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, later completing a PhD in composition at King’s College London. His compositions explore a broad range of musical forms and have received awards including the 2024 Royal Philharmonic Society Award and the 2024 Ivor Novello Award.

Change Ringing

Change Ringing is a collaborative artwork that combines sculpture, data visualisation and contemporary classical music to communicate the history of climate change. Peter Shenai created six bronze bells whose shapes are derived from statistical representations of summer temperatures at intervals across the twentieth century. When struck in chronological order, the bells produce changing tones that reflect shifts in temperature. Laurence Osborn used these sounds as the basis for a composition for bells and string orchestra, transforming climate data into a musical experience that invites audiences to engage with global warming through sound and sculpture.
