Laurie Frick

Data artist

Laurie Frick is an American information and data artist, as well as a former high-tech executive, who lives and works in Austin, Texas. Holding an MBA from the University of Southern California and an MFA from the New York Studio School, she leverages her 20-year background in engineering and tech management to bridge the gap between algorithmic science and fine art. Frick is widely recognized for her “data portraits”—hand-crafted, large-scale installations, geometric grids, and abstract mosaics built from organic materials like wood, wool felt, leather, and glass. Her work, which has been exhibited in museums across North America and featured at institutions like Google, Facebook, and TEDx, reimagines mass data collection not as an invasive threat, but as a deeply human medium for self-knowledge and reflection.

Your data: from creepy to irresistible

“Your data: from creepy to irresistible” captures Laurie Frick’s foundational artistic philosophy and public talks regarding the future of the “quantified self”. In this concept, Frick addresses society’s growing anxiety over relentless digital surveillance and data tracking, proposing a radical cultural shift: reclaiming personal data and transforming it into physical art. Rather than treating tracking metrics—such as sleep patterns, location history, and biomarkers—as invasive or sinister corporate logs, she translates these abstract digital streams into vibrant, hand-built physical grids. By remodeling the faceless algorithm at a tangible, human scale, the project demonstrates how personal big data can evolve from an unsettling corporate footprint into a beautiful, irresistible tool for absolute self-understanding.
