Designer and filmaker

Catherine Griffiths is a designer and filmmaker working at the intersection of data, film and landscape inquiries. Her new cinematic practice addresses computation as a core language and technology of our time. Her research combines computational visualization and cinematic aesthetics to reveal, analyze and subvert media tactics. She has an interdisciplinary background having worked on both ecological schemes in architecture and engineering firms and film projects engaged with the landscape. She has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the University of the Arts London, a master’s degree in Architecture from The Bartlett, University College London, and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles.

Computational visualization to break the fourth wall of computer vision

Computation and algorithms have reached all areas of daily life, obscuring layers of complexity and behavior to the points users are no longer aware of the processes they are engaging. This paper explores the opportunities and necessity of revealing computation as a fourth wall and explore the user’s agency over the technology being used. This research seeks to have social impact as a new form of computation visualization, allowing for a close reading of algorithms as part of the media literacy needed for the 21st century.
