Nova Jiang

Artist

Nova Jiang is a Chinese-born artist based in Los Angeles whose practice combines new technologies with traditional artistic techniques. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland in 2006 and an MFA in Design Media Arts from UCLA in 2009. Her work spans interactive installations, sculpture, painting and public art, exploring participation, play, identity and the relationship between people and their environments. She often creates open-ended systems in which audiences can contribute to the development of an artwork. Her projects have been exhibited at institutions including Centre Pompidou in Paris, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the ICC in Tokyo. She has received fellowships from organisations including Eyebeam, Skowhegan and Wave Hill.

Involving the audience participation

Nova Jiang explores how audience participation can become an integral part of the artistic process. In Ideogenetic Machine, an interactive installation, visitors’ portraits are incorporated into a comic book generated in real time by custom software. Participants can influence the evolving narrative through performance and collaboration, even adding their own dialogue to the images. Other projects, such as Cloud Vessel, invite audiences to take part in shared experiences involving art, environmental processes and everyday materials. Through play, interaction and collective creativity, Jiang challenges the traditional separation between artist and audience, allowing each participant to help shape the work.
