Frederik De Wilde

Artist

Frederik De Wilde is a Belgian artist whose practice lies at the intersection of art, science, technology and design. He studied fine arts, audiovisual arts and philosophy, developing an interdisciplinary approach to exploring invisible, inaudible and intangible phenomena. His work investigates complex systems and the ways technology affects society and the environment, often through collaborations with scientists and research institutions. He is best known for Blackest-Black, a series of nano-engineered artworks developed in collaboration with Rice University and NASA, which received the 2010 Ars Electronica Next Idea Award. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including ZKM in Germany, Centre Pompidou in France and the Venice Biennale.

Hacking the Universe

In Hacking the Universe, Frederik De Wilde explores how scientific research and emerging technologies can reveal and manipulate aspects of reality that are normally beyond human perception. Drawing on nanotechnology, quantum physics and digital fabrication, he examines the creative potential of working with the fundamental properties of matter. The presentation discusses projects such as M1NE#1 and Quantum Object #1, using the creation of nano-engineered black materials and 3D-printed sculptures to investigate quantum noise, the fabric of reality and new possibilities for artistic expression.
