Alessandro Scali
Multidisciplinary artistAlessandro Scali is an Italian multidisciplinary artist and creative researcher whose practice explores the intersection of art, science and technology. Since the early 2000s, he has developed experimental projects that challenge the limits of human perception and question the role of technology in defining what can be seen, experienced and understood. He is best known for pioneering Nanoart, creating artworks engraved on silicon at microscopic and nanometric scales in collaboration with researchers at the Polytechnic University of Turin. His work has been featured in Nature and exhibited at the Seville Biennial. More recently, his practice has expanded into artificial intelligence and digital art, including the development of Catherine Gipton, an AI-powered virtual art curator.
In this presentation, Alessandro Scali explores how nanotechnology can push artistic expression beyond the limits of human vision. Through Nanoart, he creates physical artworks so small that they can only be observed using specialised microscopes, challenging the assumption that art must be visible to have meaning. The project extends this question beyond Earth through his contribution to MoonArk, an initiative involving Carnegie Mellon University and other collaborators that aimed to send artistic and cultural artefacts to the Moon. By combining nanotechnology, scientific research and artistic experimentation, Scali examines the relationship between art, perception and human presence on a cosmic scale.
