Sougwen Chung
Artist and researcherSougwen Chung is a Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher known for pioneering collaborations between humans and machines. Born in China and raised in Canada, her multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, sculpture, installation and performance. Her work investigates the relationship between human gestures and machine-generated marks, using robotics, artificial intelligence and biometric technologies to explore how humans and computers interact. She was a research fellow at the MIT Media Lab and an artist-in-residence at Google and Bell Labs. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the New Museum in New York, the NTT InterCommunication Center in Tokyo and The Drawing Center in New York.
Chung’s work explores the boundary between human creativity and machine intelligence. Through experiments combining drawing, robotics and computational systems, she investigates how human gestures and machine-generated movements can influence one another, challenging conventional distinctions between artist and tool. Her practice considers the possibilities that emerge when humans and machines collaborate in the creative process.
