ArtistLev Manovich is a Russian-born artist, author and leading theorist of digital culture, media art and digital humanities. He studied fine arts, architecture and filmmaking in Moscow before moving to New York, where he earned a master’s degree in Visual Science and Cognitive Psychology from New York University and a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester. He is a Presidential Professor at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, and founder of the Cultural Analytics Lab. His work explores how software, data and computational methods shape contemporary culture, and his artistic projects have been exhibited internationally at institutions including Centre Pompidou and ZKM.
In this presentation, Lev Manovich explores how social media data can be analysed and visualised to reveal patterns in contemporary culture and urban life. Selfiecity examines thousands of Instagram selfies from different cities to investigate how people represent themselves through photography. On Broadway combines social media images, location data, taxi activity and economic indicators to create an interactive portrait of Manhattan’s Broadway. Both projects demonstrate how large datasets can be transformed into visual experiences that offer new perspectives on people, cities and everyday behaviour.
