The Underground Connection

What do cities such as Buenos Aires, Bilbao, New York, London, Medellín, Barcelona, and Toronto have in common? They are major metropolises that are part of networks that foster social and cultural exchange. All of them have extensive underground metro systems.

The underground environment in each city offers us a glimpse into the cultural diversity that exists above ground—a reflection of society within the very heart of the city. These metro networks also enable not only physical but also emotional connections between different stations and neighbourhoods across the city.

Based on this premise, Argentine artist Joaquín Fargas created The Underground Connection, an artistic project born from the idea of bringing international communities closer together and fostering connections between them through art and technology, using the different metro systems around the world as a unifying vehicle. The project began in Buenos Aires and has since opened its connections to different cities around the world. Throughout Europe, Technarte promotes the participation of different cities and metro networks, encouraging the involvement of both public and private organisations.
