3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a manufacturing process that creates three-dimensional objects from a digital model by depositing material layer by layer. Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, which typically start with a solid block of material and remove portions until the desired shape is achieved, 3D printing builds each object layer by layer. This makes it possible to produce highly complex geometries with great precision while reducing material waste.
Over the last few decades, this technology has become firmly established across industries such as medicine, architecture, automotive engineering, aerospace, and product design, where it is used both for rapid prototyping and the production of final components.
3D Printing Applied to Art
In the artistic field, 3D printing is used to create sculptures, installations, design objects, and hybrid works that combine digital processes with traditional techniques. Its integration into the creative process makes it possible to develop forms that would be difficult to achieve using conventional methods while incorporating tools such as parametric modelling, 3D scanning, and generative design.
Beyond the final outcome, additive manufacturing has transformed the way many artists work. The ability to modify a digital model, produce multiple iterations of the same piece, and combine different materials and techniques encourages more flexible creative processes in which experimentation becomes an essential part of developing the artwork.
3D Printing at Technarte
3D printing has been a recurring technology throughout different editions of Technarte. In the latest edition, Theo Harper was recognised for the work he presented at Technarte Expo, a 3D-printed sculpture that highlights the creative possibilities of digital fabrication. His relationship with this technology, however, dates back several years: at Technarte 2022, he presented 3D Printing Backwards, a research project exploring how the gestures of hand-building with clay can be translated into the digital environment through computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing.
Harper’s work is just one example among many. At Technarte 2019, Tavs Jorgensen explored the application of 3D printing to glass casting with Glassworks: Interdisciplinary Exploration of 3D Printing and Glass Casting. At Technarte 2022, Kaitlyn Jo Smith presented American Standard, a project combining 3D scanning, 3D printing, and machine learning to reflect on the impact of automation on the working class. A year later, at Technarte 2023, Cécile Meier and Alejandro Bonnet presented Virtual Sculpture in Tenerife, a project that integrates digital sculpture, 3D printing, and laser cutting to bring artworks from virtual environments into physical space.
Since 2006, Technarte has brought together projects that demonstrate how technologies like these can inspire new forms of artistic expression and research.
