Lily Hunter Green is an interdisciplinary artist whose work merges technology with environmental advocacy. Over the past decade, she has used digital media, interactive technologies, and scientific research to address ecological issues such as sustainability, biodiversity, and the human impact on the natural world. For Lily, technology is a tool to engage audiences and inspire collective action for ecological change.
Central to her practice is a focus on pollinators, particularly bees, and their role in ecological balance. As a beekeeper, Lily combines hands-on knowledge with technological tools to explore the connections between nature and technology. Drawing from bioengineering and data science she creates immersive, interactive experiences that allow audiences to engage with ecological data, monitor environmental health, and understand conservation challenges.
Silencing the Virus
“Silencing the Virus” and “Hive Heroes” are two interconnected works, which together form a two-part journey into the world of honeybee social immunity, viral threats, and collective resilience.
“Silencing the Virus” is an immersive Sci-Art installation that transforms the genome of a Paralysis Virus (IAPV) into a haunting musical composition and glowing honeycomb visualization. Participants navigate a digital hive, experiencing how the virus spreads and discovering how collective action—mirroring honeybee behavior—can “silence the virus.” This work raises awareness about honeybee decline while blending art with cutting-edge molecular biology research.
“Hive Heroes” builds on this foundation, inviting participants to become “worker bees” in a collaborative, fast-paced game. Using LED vests and wearable technology, players work together to combat a simulated virus, depositing RNA “healing cells” to protect the hive. This interactive experience not only highlights teamwork and resilience but contributes real data to RNA research, merging education, science, and play.
