Refik Anadol is a Turkish-American media artist, director and pioneer in the use of data and machine intelligence in art. Born in Istanbul in 1985, he holds an MFA in Media Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he teaches in the Department of Design Media Arts. He is the director and co-founder of Refik Anadol Studio, based in Los Angeles. His practice combines architecture, data science and machine learning to create immersive installations, audiovisual performances and public artworks that transform large datasets into dynamic visual environments. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Architectural Intelligence in the age of Social Computing

“Architectural Intelligence in the Age of Social Computing” is a theoretical and research framework in which Refik Anadol proposes redefining static architecture by transforming it into a living, fluid medium through the use of collective data and artificial intelligence algorithms. In this concept, the built environment ceases to be a mere physical structure and becomes a dynamic interface that uses the invisible flows of human interaction and digital memories as if they were pigment. By integrating these technologies into facades and urban spaces, Anadol seeks to endow buildings with “artificial intelligence” capable of processing, remembering, and “dreaming” the information generated by society, merging the physical and digital realms into an immersive collective experience.
