Eddo Stern
Artist and game designerEddo Stern is an Israeli-born American artist, game designer and educator based in Los Angeles. He studied Electronic Media and Art at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and earned an MFA in Art and Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts in 2000. His work explores the boundaries between video games, contemporary art and digital culture, combining computer software, hardware, kinetic sculpture, film and live performance. Through experimental games and interactive installations, he examines the relationship between virtual worlds and physical experience, often addressing war, history, identity and popular culture. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Walker Art Center, Tate Liverpool and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He is a professor in UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts and has directed the UCLA Game Lab.
In Five Game Projects, Eddo Stern presents five experimental works that explore the boundaries between video games and contemporary art. The projects combine interactive gameplay with unconventional visual techniques, including 3D graphics, electronics, painting, calligraphy and hand-drawn imagery. Works such as Darkgame 4.0, Vietnam Romance, Still Life with Putin, House Stern Pachinko and Cruise Control investigate how games can communicate ideas about history, politics, identity and popular culture. By reworking familiar gaming conventions, Stern challenges the distinction between entertainment and artistic expression, using interactive systems to question how digital media shape our understanding of reality.
