We live surrounded by data. Every internet search, every photo we share, every journey tracked by our smartphones, and every scientific measurement generates information that can be collected, analysed, and interpreted.

Unlike traditional data visualization, whose primary goal is to make information easier to understand, Data Art transforms data into visual, sonic, or interactive artworks through algorithms, programming, and digital tools. In this way, virtually any dataset can become the raw material for a Data Art project, from scientific information to data generated by human activity.

 

Why Is Data Art Gaining Prominence?

The rise of Data Art is closely linked to the digital transformation of our society. Never before have we generated so much data or had access to such powerful tools for analysing it and turning it into creative experiences. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have expanded the possibilities of this discipline, enabling artists to work with vast amounts of information in increasingly innovative ways.

This growth has also led to the increasing presence of Data Art in museums, festivals, conferences, and research centres around the world. Its ability to combine creativity, technology, and knowledge has made it one of the defining forms of contemporary digital art.

 

Data Art at the Technarte Conference

Data Art has been part of Technarte since its earliest editions. Over the years, the conference has brought together artists and researchers who use data as a creative language to develop installations, immersive experiences, generative artworks, and other projects that explore new approaches to artistic creation.

Among them is Refik Anadol, internationally recognised for transforming vast datasets into immersive audiovisual installations through artificial intelligence. Technarte has also welcomed Calin Segal, whose research explores the relationship between data, complex systems, and human perception through interactive installations and generative processes. Another notable example is Yoon Chung Han, an artist who combines scientific data, programming, and visualisation to create works that reflect on the relationship between nature and humanity.

The participation of these artists reflects the vision that has defined Technarte since 2006: bringing audiences the most innovative ideas from the international creative landscape while providing a meeting point for those shaping the future of artistic creation.
