PhoEf > The Undisclosed Poétics of the Photovoltaic Effect
Abstract

PhoEf is a research project exploring the essence of the photovoltaic effect - the conversion of light in electrical energy - in the realms of science, industry, technology and the arts.

PhoEf emerges from a personal, transversal flight through the interconnected worlds behind and around photovoltaics, a technology based on A.E. Becquerel's 1839 discovery of the photovoltaic effect which is the physics behind the Photovoltaic (solar) cell.

Photovoltaic technologies are at last becoming affordable and widespread. This means we can put innovation and creative design at the centre of this technology. Freed from the status of mere spin-off from military research in the space race or commercial hand-medown, PV is ready to take its place in world changing, life enhancing designs.

As photovoltaics illustrate the interwovenness of matter and mankind, with the elements and the cosmos, it promises to trigger a deeper understanding of the qualities, origins and movements of light; of the Sun. As light is the primary source of energy of photovoltaic technologies, they are unsurprisingly subject to the schizophrenia of the photon's behaviour as both wave and a particle, their multiplicities; DC to DC, healthy to dangerous, subtle to aggressive, absent to abundant, invisible to tangible, and from DC to AC. Might it lead to just enough energy to power the 3rd Industrial Revolution or to the rise of blown up Buddhas?

In an attempt to reach, inspire and connect researchers, developers and artists, PhoEf aims to contribute to a further dynamic exploration of the complex relation between light, electrical energy and the media that can be used to represent it.

Speaker's Bio

Creates installations interweaving different media and technologies with a fascination for scientific tropes and 'hyper-winded' realities and patterns. Mid-2007 he started the research project “PhoEf: The Undisclosed Poésis of the Photovoltaic Effect”, exploring the essence of Photovoltaics, the conversion of light into electrical energy in the realms of science, industry and the arts. The PhoEf docuwiki contains the compost which nourishes performative lectures and workshops.
